Why have a flu vaccine?
Getting vaccinated is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and the people around you from flu.
Protect yourself
The vaccine lowers your risk of becoming seriously unwell, being admitted to hospital or developing complications from flu.
Protect others
Fewer people catching flu means less spread in the community, which helps protect people who cannot have the vaccine themselves.
Ease the pressure
Less flu means fewer GP visits, hospital admissions and missed days at work or school during the busy winter months.
Quick and local
Your vaccine is given by our trained pharmacists at your nearest branch, with time to ask questions before it is given.
Check AvailabilityAbout flu and the flu vaccine
Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. During the winter months it can spread quickly, leading to a rise in illness and hospital admissions.
Who is most at risk
Some people are more likely to develop serious complications from flu, including:
- Older people
- Young children
- Pregnant women
- People with long-term conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease
- Healthcare workers, who are frequently exposed to flu and work with vulnerable patients
NHS eligibility for a free flu vaccine is set each season. Our pharmacist will check whether you qualify and whether the vaccine is suitable for you.
How the vaccine works
The vaccine prompts your immune system to produce antibodies against the influenza virus. If you are later exposed to flu, those antibodies help your body recognise the virus and fight it off.
At your appointment
Our pharmacist will give you information about the vaccine, answer any questions and explain the possible side effects before it is given. Wearing a short-sleeved or loose top makes the injection quicker and easier.
If you are also eligible for a Covid vaccine, take a look at our Covid vaccination service. For minor illnesses over the winter, our Pharmacy First service can help, and you can browse all of our NHS services.
Flu vaccination questions
Why do I need a flu vaccine every year?
Flu viruses change constantly, so the vaccine is updated each year to match the strains expected to be most common that season. Last year’s vaccine may not protect you against this year’s viruses.
How long does the flu vaccine take to work?
It takes about two weeks for your immune system to build enough protection after the vaccine. That is why it is a good idea to be vaccinated before flu starts to spread widely.
When is the best time to have it?
The flu season usually runs from around October to March, so the autumn months are ideal. If the season has already started, it is not too late. The vaccine can still offer protection at any point during the season.
Can the vaccine give me flu?
The flu vaccine usually contains inactivated (killed) virus or pieces of the virus, which stimulate your immune system without causing flu. Some people have mild side effects such as a sore arm, a slight temperature or aching muscles, which normally pass quickly.
Will the vaccine stop me getting flu completely?
No vaccine is 100% effective, but the flu jab significantly reduces your risk of serious illness and hospital admission. If you do catch flu after being vaccinated, it is likely to be milder and shorter.
Why should I call my branch before visiting?
Demand for flu vaccines is high during the season and supply can be intermittent. Calling your nearest branch first lets you check that vaccines are in stock before you travel.
