Blood pressure testing in Birmingham
High blood pressure rarely causes symptoms, which is why a regular check matters. Pan Pharmacy offers NHS blood pressure testing at our branches across Birmingham, so you can find out where you stand without waiting for a GP appointment.
Our pharmacy team will take your reading, explain what it means and help you decide on any next steps.
Blood pressure checks and 24-hour monitoring
Regular blood pressure checks can help identify high blood pressure, which often has no obvious symptoms. Pan Pharmacy provides NHS blood pressure testing as part of the hypertension case-finding service.
If an initial reading is raised, further assessment may include 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) to provide a more detailed picture of your blood pressure throughout the day and night.
Our pharmacy team will explain your results and advise you on any appropriate next steps.

How blood pressure testing works
From your first reading to any follow-up, the process is straightforward and you will know your results before you leave.
Initial check
A quick, non-invasive reading taken in a private area of the pharmacy using clinically validated equipment, with your result available straight away.
Further monitoring
If your first reading is raised, we may offer 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) or home monitoring to build a fuller picture.
Results explained
Our pharmacist talks you through what the two numbers mean and how your reading compares with a healthy range.
Next steps
Depending on your results, we give lifestyle advice or refer you to your GP so that any follow-up care can be arranged.
Book a CheckUnderstanding your blood pressure
Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries as it circulates around your body. It is recorded as two numbers: the pressure when your heart beats, over the pressure when your heart rests between beats.
Hypertension is the medical term for blood pressure that stays consistently above the normal range. Because it is often symptomless, many people only find out they have it after a routine check.
What to expect at your check
Your reading is taken in a private and comfortable setting. A cuff is placed around your upper arm and gently inflated, and the whole process only takes a few minutes. You do not need to undress, but a short-sleeved or loose top makes things easier.
After your results
If your blood pressure is in a healthy range, we can suggest how often to have it checked again. If it is raised, our pharmacist may discuss diet, activity and other lifestyle changes, arrange further monitoring or refer you to your GP. We work alongside your GP so that your care is joined up.
If you have recently been prescribed a medicine for high blood pressure, our New Medicines Service can help you get started with it. You can see everything else we offer on our NHS services page.
Blood pressure testing questions
What do the two numbers in a blood pressure reading mean?
The first number is your systolic pressure, the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. The second is your diastolic pressure, measured when your heart rests between beats. Both are recorded in millimetres of mercury (mmHg), and a normal reading is typically around 120/80 mmHg.
Why should I have a check if I feel well?
High blood pressure often has no obvious symptoms, so many people do not know they have it. Left untreated, it can raise the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney damage and problems with your vision. A regular check is a simple way to spot it early.
What happens if my reading is high?
A single raised reading does not always mean you have high blood pressure. We may carry out further confirmatory tests, such as ambulatory or home blood pressure monitoring. Based on the results, our pharmacist will either give you lifestyle advice or refer you to your GP for further assessment.
What is 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring?
ABPM uses a small cuff and monitor that you wear as you go about your normal day. It takes readings at intervals over 24 hours, including overnight, which gives a more detailed picture of your blood pressure than a single reading in the pharmacy.
Who is the NHS case-finding service for?
The NHS Hypertension Case-Finding Service is designed to identify adults who may have undiagnosed high blood pressure. If you already have a diagnosis, our team can still talk to you about monitoring and support. Our pharmacist will check which option is suitable for you.
